Healthcare Industry News > Canadian health care system Canadian health care systemCanadian health care system has both positives and negatives when compared to the current system of the United States. On the plus side, all 33 million Canadians are provided with health care through a government system, regardless of their income or health. In exchange for that privilege, many Canadians must be placed on waiting lists to receive certain types of treatments, including quadruple bypass heart surgery. Despite the waiting list, Canadians do have a lower mortality rate and more nurses than the United States. Additionally, Canada spends just over $4,500 per person on health care while the United States spends almost $7,500. Part of the spending difference is that about one-third of American health care costs are administrative. In Canada, administrative costs are much lower. While most Canadians are content with their system, some in the country do wish to include more Americanized options: private clinics or hospitals where patients could have procedures performed more quickly. Those costs would be paid for by individuals, not the government which pays for 70% of the health care through tax dollars and the other 30% coming from other sources, including supplemental insurance offered by employers. To cover the costs of their program, Canadians do pay more in taxes - 32% of the GDP- than Americans - 26%. |
