Healthcare Industry News > California employer-provided health coverage California employer-provided health insurance coverageA nationwide study by Economy Policy Institute of employer-provided health coverage found California ranks as one of the lowest in making this benefit available to workers. While 63% of Americans receive health insurance benefits through their job, the number is only 55.7% in California. Not only is their percentage low, but the numbers have been falling more rapidly in recent years. Approximately 500,000 Californians have lost employer-provided health insurance between 200 and 2006. Surprisingly, the steepest decline was felt by wage earners in the middle of the pay spectrum. However, the lowest wage earners still represent the group most likely not to have coverage. While California is facing the same health insurance cost increases as other states, their problems are somewhat magnified because of their larger population. Plus, many of the industries employing their citizens - agriculture and hospitality, for example - traditionally do not offer health insurance to employees. Currently, more than 6.5 million Californians are without health insurance. |
