Healthcare Industry News > Future May Be Bleak for California Health Care Plan Future May Be Bleak for California Health Care PlanThe Senate Health Committee is reviewing the proposed California health plan that would extend health care to about 4.7 million state residents. Although the plan was getting a thorough review on January 23rd, a decision won't be made on its fate until January 28th. That decision may not be a positive one. Two of the Democrats on the committee have already voiced their opposition to the plan and if the four Republicans agree, then they may have the majority decision on the 11-member committee. If that looks like a possibility, additional members can be added to the committee before a vote is taken. Senator Leland Yee from San Francisco is concerned this bill would not protect consumers from having to pay unaffordable prices for mandatory health insurance. Senator Sheila Kuehl, the committee's chairwoman, supports a move towards a single-payer system and believes the bill would be creating an inferior health care system in the state. The $14 billion bill would still not cover everyone. Health care would only be extended to about 70% of uninsured Californians. The plan includes a health insurance mandate and would require employers to either offer health insurance benefits or to pay a fee that would help fund the program for the uninsured. The committee is trying to determine if the premium costs could be kept to below $300 per month. |
