Healthcare Industry News > President Bush's veto on the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation President Bush's veto on the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation The Democratic-controlled U. S. House of Representatives could not secure enough votes to override President Bush's veto on the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation. The legislation would have extended the program's current budget by $35 billion over the course of the next five years and would have insured an additional 4 million children. The costs of the bill would have been covered by an increase to the federal cigarette tax of 61 cents per pack. The override vote fell short by just 13 votes.Critics of the legislation worried it would provide healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants and that too many adults would benefit from the program even though it was not created to provide for their healthcare coverage needs. Proponents of the legislation argued that health care plan costs have risen than when the budget for SCHIP was originally funded so changes are needed. House of Representatives leader Nancy Pelosi has promised new legislation on this issue will be on the table in two weeks. |
