Healthcare Industry News > Bi-national Health Insurance Programs Bi-national Health Insurance Programs More California employers are looking at bi-national health insurance programs to provide affordable coverage to Mexican workers. The plans are offered by several health insurance companies in conjunction with Mexico’s only HMO licensed to work in California - Sistemas Medicos Nacionales S.A (SIMNSA). Employers and employees pay less in premiums for these policies because medical care is divided across the borders. Doctor visits in California are covered but so are hospital stays in Mexico where costs are considerably lower. The monthly premiums differ by around $60 to $70 – a savings of $720 to $840 a year per employee. Another option is to work with Mexico to extend their health program, Salud Popular, to citizens working in the United States. Through the program, only the wealthiest Mexican residents have to purchase private insurance. Everyone else receives free or reduced cost coverage. Because the program is currently administered at the state level, organizing payments across the border would be a challenge. However, a national billing system will be adopted by the Salud Popular program by the end of 2010 which may make such an effort easier to accomplish. Read original story at Signon San Diego |
