Healthcare Industry News > Arizona residents found discontent with the current health insurance system
Arizona residents found discontent with the current health insurance systemRecent polling of Arizona residents found discontent with the current health insurance system, but a program being put together for possible inclusion on the 2008 ballots in the state hopes to solve some of those concerns. Nearly three-fourths of the polled residents in the state claim to be unhappy with the cost of health insurance in their state and approximately half aren't happy with the quality of care they are receiving through their current plan. Health Arizona, a group chaired by physician Eve Shapiro, has been working on a plan that would increase health insurance coverage in the state so fewer individuals would be uninsured. Shapiro and her team view the recent poll results as good news for their plan which will be paid for by an increase in "sin taxes" (taxes on items like cigarettes or alcohol). While the group has no estimates about how many Arizonans would be covered under their proposed plan, Shapiro believes it would definitely make a dent in the numbers but how big a dent depends on how much money can be raised from the taxes. Two other physicians in Arizona are currently working on a constitutional amendment in the state that would prohibit the passage of any health insurance bill that forces individuals to purchase health insurance. Even if such an amendment would go through, the Health Arizona plan does not include mandates and, therefore, would not be affected. |
