Healthcare Industry News > Affordable health insurance for Missouri citizens Affordable health insurance for Missouri citizens On November 2nd, Missouri Democratic leaders in the state's House of Representatives rolled out their plan to help every citizen of their state secure affordable health insurance. Their plan begins by re-adding 180,000 Missouri citizens to the Medicaid program after their coverage was eliminated in 2005. Back in 2005, then Governor Matt Blunt set income standards for Medicaid as low as possible which meant a parent with two children could earn only $292 per month to be eligible for the program. Because state Medicaid funding is matched with Federal dollars, the decrease in the Medicaid rolls cost the state almost $1 billion in Federal monies.A second part of their plan is the creation of the Missouri Health Policy Authority, a governor-appointed board dedicated to coordinating the work of the 31 state agencies responsible for dealing with health care issues. They would also be able to investigate cases of fraud. |
