A lack of health insurance may also increase your chances of dying from cancerA lack of health insurance may also increase your chances of dying from cancer. The American Cancer Society's recent study discovered that the uninsured have a 60% greater chance of dying after being diagnosed with cancer than individuals who are insured. The main reason for the discrepancy is that the uninsured rarely can afford or seek out early screening tests that can catch cancer early enough to make it treatable. The problem is also significant for people who are underinsured because they may not be able to afford the co-payments, deductibles, or co-insurance required for certain types of cancer treatments. According to the study, women without health insurance were less likely to have had a Pap test or a mammogram in the last three years. Fewer uninsured people were also screened for colorectal cancer and were more likely to be diagnosed with the disease when it had reached Stage IV. One Harvard Medical School professor believed the study indicated a need for a national non-profit health insurance program that would cover everyone. |
